Mizero TSS Triumphs in Football Match During Anti-Drug Awareness Campaign

Rusizi, June 26, 2025

As part of the nationwide campaign to raise awareness against drug abuse and illicit human trafficking, Mizero Technical Secondary School (TSS) hosted a vibrant community event culminating in a thrilling football match against a team of motorcycle transporters, commonly known as Abamotari, from Rusizi District.

Mizero Tss This initiative was organized by Global Health Alliance in line with the Government of Rwanda’s joint efforts to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, observed annually on June 26th. The campaign, running from June 16 to 26, aims to educate and mobilize communities, especially the youth, in the fight against drug-related harm.

Mizero Tss The football match, held on KAMASHANGI grounds, attracted a lively audience of students from various schools—Mizero TSS, St. Mathews, GS St. Bruno, GS Gihundwe A & B, Gill Baram—along with local residents and district representatives. In a tightly contested game, Mizero TSS edged out the Abamotari team with a final score of 3–2, sparking celebrations among the students and staff.

Mizero Tss As a symbol of encouragement and appreciation, the winning team received an envelope containing 80,000 Rwandan francs. But beyond the victory, the day’s true success lay in its powerful message: drug abuse is a serious threat to health, education, and national development—and it requires a united front to defeat.

Participants hailed the event as both entertaining and enlightening. “This was more than a football match—it was a call to action for all of us to protect our future from the dangers of drugs,” said one student.

Authorities are encouraging schools, youth centers, health facilities, and local task forces to continue organizing similar events that combine education and engagement. The 2025 campaign reflects a growing recognition that awareness and community participation are key tools in the national strategy to combat drug abuse.

The Scout Week

February 22, 2025

On Baden Powell's 168th birthday on February 22, 2025, Scout Week took place, as it does every year. All week long, the Mizero TSS scouts and guides organized good deeds such as cleaning up the school, a parade, the preparation of pledges, and a theater show.

Mizero Tss

The week ended on Sunday with a gathering of all Rusizi and Nyamasheke scouts and guides. After walking together, they arrived at the Gihundwe chapel for a mass co-celebrated by the scout chaplain, Father Berthier, and the Jesuit director of the Mizero TSS school, Father Innocent Kamanzi, SJ.

18 scouts and 4 guides made their promise and are now fully part of the community. 4 leaders also received their training certificates.

Father Richard McGowan Visit to MIZERO TSS

January 8-10, 2025

On the dates of January 8th to 10th, 2025, MIZERO TSS had the opportunity to host Father Richard McGowan, SJ, a Jesuit from the US East Jesuit Province, who is also the treasurer of the province. Fr. Rich’s visit to MIZERO TSS was in line with a tie of friendship between the US East Jesuit Province and the Rwanda-Burundi Region of the Society of Jesus, initiated three years ago. MIZERO TSS, being one of the important works of the RWB Region, responding to the second and third Universal Apostolic Preferences (UAP): Accompanying the youth and Promoting dignity of people on the margins, was the focus for Fr. Rich’s visit in Rwan

da.

He appreciated the school's work to empower young women and men with the knowledge and skills they need for their hope-filled future. Fr. Rich confirmed his willingness to support the MIZERO TSS expansion project, which will help the school welcome more students to respond well to its mission. We will always cherish his love and support for our school, and we promise our prayers in his mission and that of the US East Jesuit Province.

Creation of a Well at Mizero TSS

Last December, drilling work was carried out, enabling the school to benefit from the water that lies beneath its soil.

Mizero Tss

Until then, the school relied on municipal water and rainwater, two sources that do not guarantee a sufficient and continuous supply of water for the pupils. Numerous shortages occurred, particularly during the dry season, disrupting school activities. Pupils even had to fetch water from Lake Kivu, which was unclean and could cause health problems.

Mizero Tss

The construction of a well will now enable pupils and teachers to benefit from clean, natural water in sufficient quantity.

The work was largely financed by the Veolia Foundation, without which the well would not have been possible. The Mizero TSS school would like to thank the foundation for its support, which has made a significant contribution to improving the living conditions of students, teachers, and all those who benefit from this new water source.

Thanks to a donation from the Belgian organization HUBEJE, we are now preparing the tanks to store the borehole water for use from the reservoirs.
